first_img“These Buffalo Sabres are just getting started.”Right on, @NHLNetwork. #LetsGoBuffalo ⚔️ pic.twitter.com/ZXh5asrmEd— Buffalo Sabres (@BuffaloSabres) December 1, 2018The Maple Leafs (19-8-0) will face the Sabres for the first of four head-to-head games starting on Tuesday at KeyBank Arena. Toronto is in search of their fifth-straight win while Buffalo (17-8-3), who have now lost three in a row (0-2-1) after their long win streak, could pass the Leafs for second in the Atlantic Division with a regulation win.“I’ve been impressed with their team, their structure, their speed, their work ethic, the whole thing,” Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock said following Tuesday’s morning skate. “I think they’ve got a good hockey club.”Pretty soon Leaf fans won’t be able to buy tickets here because Buffalo fans will have bought them already.”In 2016, the Sabres were 8-9-5 at the end of November and in 2017 they were 6-15-4. This season they were 17-7-3 when the calendar turned to December.Forward Mitchell Marner has always been impressed with the type of talent the Sabres have had since he came into the league in 2016 but said that he feels their early season success has allowed them to flourish.“They’ve always had skilled players but the confidence of their team just keeps getting higher and higher as the games go on,” he commented. “I think that’s something they probably didn’t have before and they’ve added a couple of players that have really helped the team.”Two of their most significant additions, forward Jeff Skinner and defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, have made immediate impacts. Skinner, who was acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes on Aug. 2, is second on the Sabres in points (28) and in the NHL (20), behind Patrik Laine’s 20. Dahlin, who was selected first overall in the 2018 NHL Draft, leads all rookie defensemen in points with 14 (two goals, 12 assists) and is fourth in scoring among all rookies.Forward Jack Eichel, now in his fourth NHL season, is scoring at the highest pace of his career, with 32 points (five goals, 27 assists) in 28 games as he centers a line with Skinner and right wing Sam Reinhart.“They’ve got a lot of depth, obviously a lot of young talent with guys who can put the puck in the net,” Maple Leafs forward John Tavares said. “Skinner has played really well for them and Eichel is obviously a force out there.”When you have success it builds a lot of confidence, especially amongst a young group. I’m sure they’re feeling like they’re having a lot of fun and feel good about their game so tonight will be a good test for us.”Dahlin had nine points (one goal, eight assists) and was plus-nine during the Sabres 10-game win streak. Marner said Dahlin is a dynamic player who the Maple Leafs will pay extra attention towards making sure he is accounted for. If there were any doubts about whether the Buffalo Sabres have turned a corner, Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews noted their recent 10-game win streak as evidence they have.“They’ve been playing some really good hockey as of late,” Matthews said. “They were on that hot stretch and a lot of guys, I think everybody in the league, took notice that they’re for real and not a team you take lightly,”  “I’ve seen a couple of his highlights, I think everyone knew where he was drafted that he has a lot of skill and is very smart with that puck and can make plays,” he said. “I think you just have to be aware of him jumping in the rush, they’ve got a couple guys that can do that.”Matthews agreed the Sabres are effective at using their defense to generate offense.“Their defense are moving the puck, they’re up in the rush all the time, and their forwards have been dynamic for them,” Matthews said. “It’s going to be another good challenge for us tonight, it’s a good rivalry, it’s going to be a good atmosphere.”last_img read more
