By Dialogo April 03, 2012 In a warehouse in the port of Santo Tomás de Castilla, on the Caribbean around 300 km northwest of the capital, the Guatemalan police seized 320 barrels of chemical substances for the production of synthetic drugs, originating in China and destined for Honduras, the agency announced. The substance, identified as monomethylamine, is banned in Guatemala, but it was labeled as polyester for industrial use. According to the authorities, the chemical precursors arrived at the port terminal on the ship San Antonio, in four containers of 80 barrels each. The chemical substances came from Shanghai and had as their destination the Honduran firm San Marcos, Ocotepeque Importadora y Exportadora S.A., the Anti-Narcotics Analysis and Information Division (Daia) of the National Civil Police specified in a statement. The daily Prensa Libre commented that the import documentation specified that the product would remain in Guatemala for 17 days and would then be transported to the southern part of the country to be loaded onto another ship that would take it to Puerto Cortés, Honduras. The police and the Army have seized more than 2,500 receptacles containing chemical substances so far this year, chiefly in Guatemala City, Puerto Quetzal (on the Pacific), and Puerto Santo Tomás de Castilla (on the Caribbean).

PORTLAND, Oregon, (CMC):Jamaica international Darren Mattocks scored his first goal for his new club Portland Timbers but it proved in vain as the hosts crashed to a 3-1 defeat to FC Dallas at Providence Park. The 25-year-old, who joined Portland last month after four years with the Vancouver Whitecaps, came off the bench in the 65th minute in the Wednesday night contest to pull one back for his side two minutes later, and rescue some pride after they had conceded three first-half goals.Portland now lie one from bottom in the western conference with five points from six games.FC Dallas, featuring St Kitts and Nevis international Atiba Harris, started quickly and were ahead as early as the fourth minute when Michael Barrios finished from close range.Colombian Fabian Castillo doubled the lead in the 26th minute before Tesho Akindele capitalised on a poor clearance inside the box, to force a shot past goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey. In need of a lift, Portland turned to the pacey Mattocks and he rewarded them with a well taken goal in the 67th minute.Defender Chris Klute got down the left and sent a searching ball into the box which Walker Zimmerman failed to clear. CHICAGO – The number of U.S. children having obesity surgery has tripled in recent years, surging at a pace that could mean more than 1,000 such operations this year, new research suggests. While the procedure is more common in adults, it appears to be slightly less risky in teens, according to an analysis of data on 12- to 19-year-olds who had obesity surgery from 1996 through 2003. During that time, an estimated 2,744 youngsters nationwide had the operations. The pace tripled between 2000 and 2003, reaching 771 surgeries that year, the study found. Youngsters had shorter hospital stays than adults and none died in the hospital during the study. By contrast, there were 212 in-hospital deaths out of an estimated 104,702 adults who underwent obesity surgery in 2003, or a rate of 0.2 percent, the study found. Researchers at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, N.J., and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center analyzed a database of U.S. hospital patients. Obesity surgeries in children during the eight-year period and adults in 2003 were included in the analysis.
