Last year it was led by accounting company Grant Thornton, which this year was ranked second. The Social Mobility Employer Index ranks UK employers on actions they are taking to make roles open to candidates from all backgrounds, after previous research has shown that people from more affluent backgrounds tend to take a disproportionate number of the best jobs.Recent research from the Sutton Trust found that only about a fifth of children of low-income families went on to become high earners. It also found that almost three-quarters of the children of graduates in the UK went to university – compared with a fifth of children from low-income families. The Foundation discovered that around three-quarters (74%) of respondents feel clients care about the socio-economic diversity of their workforce, with similar proportions saying the same of race (77%) and gender (86%).More than half ask new employees whether or not their parents went to university or the type of school they attended. Thirty percent ask whether or not candidates were eligible for free school meals. Its research also showed that employers’ focus on elite Oxbridge and Russell Group universities to source talent is waning – the percentage of visits made to Russell Group institutions this year was 56%, compared to 70% last year. Oxford and Cambridge are still visited more than 75 universities combined, however. The top 10 employers ranked in the index (below) was dominated by professional services and law firms:KPMG UK LLPGrant Thornton UKMinistry of JusticeBryan Cave Leighton PaisnerDeloittePwCEYEnterprise Rent-A-CarCivil Service Fast Stream and Early TalentBaker McKenzieMore than four in 10 employers now analyse their recruitment processes to see where those from lower socio-economic groups may be falling through the gaps, said the Social Mobility Foundation.“Blind” CVs are in common use – one in four now remove the candidate’s name from the application or screening stage, while one in five remove the name of their university to avoid bias creeping into shortlisting decisions. However, despite improvements, the Foundation discovered there were still obstacles to overcome: five in 10 hires in government departments and agencies are from Russell Group universities, and this rose to eight in 10 in law firms. Some law firms hired more than 90% of staff from this group of universities, even where only half of their applicants had studied there.Around one in eight (16%) employees who considered themselves working class felt they needed to hide their class background in the workplace, the Index found.David Johnston, the Social Mobility Foundation’s chief executive, said: “We can really see organisations taking a whole host of actions to try and ensure that they have a diverse workforce in terms of socio-economic background as well as in terms of gender and race; they in turn are benefiting from accessing a much wider talent pool than they have traditionally recruited from.”Alan Milburn, former chair of the Social Mobility Commission, said that the results reflected a “mood for change” in the nation. “[Employers] are making these changes both because they see the social need to do so and because they recognise the business benefit that greater diversity can bring.”The Social Mobility Employer Index is a voluntary survey that assesses employers across seven areas, including the work they do with young people, their recruitment and selection processes and how people from lower income backgrounds progress within their organisations.More than 100 employers from 18 sectors, collectively employing over one million people, entered this year.center_img Previous Article Next Article HR in a pandemic: How three companies dealt with a surge in demandFor organisations up and down the country, Covid-19 has put considerable strain on HR. Tag: 上海龙凤1314 Coaching for accountability

first_imgPersonal accountability is an essential value for creating organizational cultures that can get results. When colleagues are respected and expectations of them are high, they can rise to the challenge.   Coaching enhances performances by motivating, inspiring and providing an ongoing support system for colleagues and direct reports.  It is a means of helping employees to understand how to meet their goals and how to develop.  By providing continuous feedback, it enables direct reports to learn and grow and be recognized in real time, rather than waiting for annual performance review which are outdated and mostly ineffective due to the lag time in these critical conversations. Learning how to conduct these ongoing conversations and developing effective listening skills will provide the foundation for coaching or developing the leadership capacity of your team members. It’s a process that is more effective over an extended period of time so that a commitment to learning is ongoing.Managers need to be able to encourage accountability and motivate their direct reports to higher levels of performance.  Knowing how to build accountability is a skill that takes place in the format of one-on-one meetings as well as in regular conversations on improved performance, motivation and problem solving. Additionally, helping colleagues to connect personal and corporate values to performance should be part of this process.Accountability must come from within someone.  Managers can encourage their colleagues to practice accountability behaviors and as a result will naturally start thinking in more accountable ways.  By establishing the alignment of roles and key responsibilities, performance objectives and accountability measurements can then be established.  Employees can be encouraged to strengthen their leadership capacity through special projects, learning opportunities and team building.  Special projects could include being part of a committee or task force to investigate an issue or solve a problem, or creating a report that marks a trend or communicates a situation affecting the department or organization’s business.Learning doesn’t always have to come from classes or books.  “Apprenticing” for a day to work with someone in another department is a way to learn more about the big picture.  “Interviewing” a top performer in their own area to determine what habits and behaviors make them shine is another opportunity. Encouraging introverted team members to become more integrated into their team by having breakfast or lunch with co-workers one-on-one could be effective. As a manager, by including coaching and feedback as part of your regular routine, you will be increasing morale and creating a feeling of confidence and respect within your team. By acknowledging your team member’s contributions, they will feel increasingly valued and motivated.  In the absence of feedback, people assume the worst.  Managing employee expectations eliminates surprises, establishes rapport, increases clarity and builds trust.  All these provide the foundation for creating actions that reflect behavior changes towards increased accountability.  Good luck!  It’s worth the effort. 49SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Stuart R. first_img Share NewsRegional Now all Americans can go to Cuba – legally! by: – July 1, 2011 Share Tweet Sharecenter_img Sharing is caring! 17 Views   no discussions Photo credit: destinationscaribbean.comNEW ROCHELLE, (USA) — For the last 50 years, most Americans have been prohibited from traveling to Cuba. Now they can start packing! As of Wednesday, Insight Cuba, the leading provider of legal people-to-people travel to Cuba has been reauthorized by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to send Americans to Cuba. When the Obama administration reversed the previous administration’s policy and posted new travel regulations allowing people-to-people educational travel, Insight Cuba was among the first to submit its application for a new license.“We’ve been preparing for this day for seven years,” said Insight Cuba Director Tom Popper. “Now that we have the license in hand, anyone and everyone can reserve their spot on one of our carefully crafted travel programs to Cuba throughout 2011 and 2012. We’ve created six exciting new experiences, which can be found on our website, providing unique access to people and places the average traveler rarely sees.”Insight Cuba emerged as a pioneer in people-to-people travel to Cuba in 2000 and sent the largest number of Americans to Cuba under a specific license since 1963. However, in 2004, US travel restrictions were tightened, eliminating most US travel to the island nation. Despite the new limitations, Insight Cuba continued to strengthen their relationships and reputation in Cuba, confident that one day they would be able to return. As a result, they are now known as the industry expert in US travel to Cuba.Insight Cuba hand picks exclusive experiences for its groups, which are kept small (maximum 16 participants). With an in-country host/escort, modern explorers can expect frequent serendipitous experiences. The comfort level is high, with four- and five-star hotels and all meals included. Prices (per person, double occupancy) also cover ground transport, domestic flights in Cuba (where required), all entry fees, professional guide services, US Treasury Department license and Letter of Authorization, and travel insurance. There are six new itineraries with over 100 departures through April 2012.Caribbean News Nowlast_img read more

Tag: 上海龙凤1314 Home prices holding steady

first_imgThis could be the year that the housing market slowdown moderates. Don’t expect a fire sale, though. The sales slide began in the first quarter of 2005 and continued unabated through January of this year. During 2005, sales of previously owned single-family homes fell an annual 24.7 percent to 9,632 transactions, the biggest decline in 17 years. But the median price increased 6.4 percent, or $36,709, to an annual record of $605,917. That pattern is holding. January sales fell an annual 29.4 percent to 569 versus January 2006. And the median price increased 1.3 percent to $613,000. Last year, the Valley became a market where houses costing half a million bucks was the norm. This year, that price tag moves up to $600,000. And with sales still soft, it could probably be in that neighborhood this time next year because appreciation is now firmly rooted in single digits, percentagewise. Last year, the median price started at $605,000 and ended at $613,000, up 1.3 percent. The same holds true for the condominium market. In January, sales fell 29 percent to 211 transactions and the median price slipped 2.5 percent to $380,100. But that’s more than a house cost a couple of years ago. For both markets, that’s a level that was practically unfathomable when this millennium started. But the situation is still not all that good for house hunters hoping for a great buying opportunity, even though sellers now need to be more realistic in setting their sales price. “Demand is actually good right now,” said Jim Link, executive vice president of the Van Nuys-based Southland Regional Association of Realtors. “What I’m hearing is buyers are out and active.” And the forecast is for an OK spring and summer buying season. But it’s definitely a residential real estate market in transition, and the move is from strong to normal. The market did collapse in the early 1990s, but that was in response to an economic meltdown that resulted in 700,000 job losses across Los Angeles and Orange counties, many of them in the once-powerful aerospace sector. And the Valley was heavily invested in that industry. Now the the economy is growing, albeit slowly, in the Valley but is more broad-based than in the past. Strong performers include international trade and a non-defense-related tech industry that is growing very rapidly. And while inventory is now building toward a normal level, housing demand remains strong. Among the negatives: Credit is tightening as the subprime market shakes out. Builders are still not keeping pace with demand. And even if this year ends up like last, it will still be a pretty good market. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Tag: 上海龙凤1314 GOP Content to Let House Democrats Tackle Earmarks

first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR Many House Republicans have been eager to suspend the chamber’s eight-year-old ban on earmarks, but House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) recently has been urging the GOP Conference to step back and let Democrats make the first move when they assume control of the House in the 116th Congress. “Let the new party wrestle with whether they want to do that. The first move is theirs on this issue now,” Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), chairman of the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee, told Politico. The House Democratic Conference is expected to consider reinstating earmarks, sometimes referred to as congressionally directed spending by lawmakers, when it meets to set its own rules for legislation. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-N.Y.), who is expected to become chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, said she does not know how Democratic members would vote on a resolution to restore earmarks. “But if there is bipartisan consensus, it’s in Article I, and we have a right to have them. And if there’s bipartisan support, they can come back,” Lowey said.If the Democratic Conference in the House moves to bring back earmarks, the chamber still would need to coordinate with the Senate to ensure the change wouldn’t hold up new spending measures. last_img read more
