first_imgPhoto: Qatar Airways QATAR Airways has announced plans to buy up to 100 Boeing aircraft worth $US18.6 billion at list prices, including 30 787-9 Dreamliners and 10 777-300ERs.The expanding Gulf carrier’s announcement of the $US11.7 billion order for the 787s and 777s increases its firm order backlog for Boeing widebody planes from 66 to 105, including 60 777Xs.It also signed a letter of intent at a ceremony in Washington, DC attended by government and airline officials, for up 60 737 MAX 8s with a list price of $US6.9 billion. Although airlines receive substantial discounts to list prices, the announcement comes at a time sales of widebody jets have slowed. It is also the biggest 787 order since 2013.Qatar currently has a fleet of 84 Boeing 777s and 787s delivered since it renewed its relationship with the US manufacturer in 2006. The airline was the first in the Middle east to operate the 787 and is the launch customer for the 777X. If the letter of intent progresses to a firm order, the 737MAX will be the first Boeing single aisle plane to join Qatar for 15 years.”Qatar Airways, already one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of aviation, today announces a significant and historic aircraft order that will power our future growth for the years and the decades ahead,” said Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker said in a statement. “Boeing has proven to be a valuable partner, and today’s announcement is testament to our appreciation of the quality of their product and their dedication to providing world class customer service.”Qatar’s total fleet of 190 aircraft includes Airbus A380, A350, A330, A340 and A320 family aircraft. It also has 50 Airbus A320 neos, the competitor to the 737 MAX, on order. But Boeing Commercial Airplanes president Ray Conner said the deal expressed confidence in Boeing’s new technology aircraft.”Our partnership with Qatar Airways has grown and strengthened tremendously over the years and I look forward to the time when its fleet will feature an increasing number of both our single and twin-aisle airplanes,” he said.Al Baker denied the commercial aircraft sale was linked to US government approval to allow Boeing to sell 36 F-15E jet fighters worth an estimated $US 4 billion to the Qatar government,  The Seattle Times reported.last_img read more

first_img3 May 2012Table Mountain’s status as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature is official, following confirmation of the results of New7Wonders’ global voting process by an international audit.“Table Mountain’s ‘provisional’ status after international voting closed on 11 November 2011 has been changed to ‘official’,” New7Wonders, the organisation behind the campaign, announced on Thursday. The results followed three years of intense campaigning in a contest that drew millions of votes from 220 countries.Place on the global ‘must see’ listCape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille, quoted in a New7Wonders statement, described the title as “a great accolade for a unique wonder of nature that belongs to all the people of Cape Town, South Africa, Africa and the world.“The New Seven Wonders title has great long-term marketing value for Cape Town and South Africa,” De Lille said. “The wonder becomes part of school curricula, it becomes a ‘must see’ and ‘bucket list’ item for travellers and explorers.”Sabine Lehmann, chairperson of the Table Mountain official supporters committee, said the official confirmation would provide a significant boost to the South African tourism industry.“Visitor numbers to Table Mountain reached record numbers after the mountain was named on the provisional list of seven sites on 11 November 2011, and we expect the official confirmation to further boost visitor interest locally and abroad,” Lehmann said.“This is already the case for the Puerto Princesa Underground River, the New7Wonder site in the Philippines.”According to New7Wonders, the Philippines island that is home to the Puerto Princesa Underground River used to have three flights a week and now has 22 flights a week, while the actual site used to attract an average of 150 visitors a day and now has 2 000 visitors a day.“The island is building a new international airport to cope with the influx of visitors,” Lehmann said.Nelson Mandela’s ‘mountain of hope’Lehmann expressed her gratitude to all those who had supported the Vote for Table Mountain campaign, including Nobel Peace Prize winners Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and former president FW de Klerk, the Springbok rugby team, and countless ordinary South Africans.Bernard Weber, president of New7Wonders, said it was of great significance that Table Mountain had been “chosen by voters globally to be the representative of Africa’s unique natural heritage.“Along with possessing a biodiversity that is exceptionally important, given its proximity to a major city, Table Mountain is notable for the historic role it played in helping Nelson Mandela cope with his long years of imprisonment,” Weber said.“Through the bars of his cell on Robben Island, the sight of the peak with its table cloth of cloud offered him hope of brighter days to come, and the statement issued by the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory on 8 November last year supporting the call to vote for Table Mountain was both an endorsement of the South African finalist and a tribute to its ability to inspire.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Tag: 上海龙凤 Industrial Solar?

first_imgAdvantages of smaller PV systemsDespite the (relatively minor) economy-of-scale that argues for larger PV systems, there are some benefits of small systems. For starters, small systems are well-suited to rooftops. A typical house, if it has a reasonable orientation, can hold a 4-6 kW solar array, enough to handle a significant fraction of the home’s power consumption (as long as then home is reasonably energy-efficient). And commercial buildings, with large flat roofs can often hold hundreds of kW or even a MW or two of solar — which can provide a significant fraction of those buildings’ electrical demands.Putting solar modules on roofs creates headaches with roof maintenance, and poor-quality installations sometimes result in roof leaks, but rooftop mounting allows us to preserve land area for agriculture, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Whenever possible, I prefer to see PV systems installed on rooftops or carports rather than ground-mounting, though I recognize that that isn’t always possible or practical.Small PV systems also usually generate electricity close to where it is being consumed. Such “distributed power” is changing the face of the utility grid. From a resilience standpoint, generating power close to the point of end-use of electricity also opens up an opportunity for incorporating either some battery storage or specialized inverters with capability to draw power from the solar system even when the grid is down — something that most grid-connected solar systems can’t do today. (For more on that, refer back to my blog, Getting Power From Solar Equipment When the Grid is Down.) The economy of scale with solarAs with wind, there is an economy-of-scale with solar-electric systems. Bulk purchase of solar modules brings the costs down somewhat and, more significantly, larger inverters (the devices that convert direct-current electricity produced by PV modules into the alternating current that can be fed into the utility grid) and other balance-of-system components are a lot less expensive per kW or MW of capacity than the residential-scale components being installed for home systems. RELATED ARTICLES Alex is founder of BuildingGreen, Inc. and executive editor of Environmental Building News. In 2012 he founded the Resilient Design Institute. To keep up with Alex’s latest articles and musings, you can sign up for his Twitter feed. But the differences in cost between large and small systems aren’t nearly as great with PV systems as they are with wind turbines. This means that the incentives for building very large solar systems (“industrial-scale” if you must) aren’t as great as they are with wind. Utility-Scale Wind TurbinesWind Power: Why it Doesn’t Make Sense EverywhereConnecticut Continues Ban on Wind TurbinesWind Farm Sued Over Noise Is big solar bad?Not in my book. As I look toward the future and a growing imperative to dramatically reduce our fossil fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, I’m convinced that we need a mix of facility sizes with renewable energy systems. There will be many places where large, ground-mounted multi-megawatt-scale solar systems make sense, such as along highways and utility corridors where the land is already degraded and agriculture may not be feasible. In arid places with lots of open land, such as the American Southwest, it should be possible for large solar systems to be developed responsibly — as long as enough open space is maintained for wildlife. This isn’t to say that huge arrays make sense everywhere, just as wind turbines don’t belong everywhere. Having served as a trustee of the Vermont Chapter of The Nature Conservancy for nine years, I am well aware of the need for natural, undisturbed habitat. But I’m also aware that if we don’t address our greenhouse gas emissions, we will be doing far more damage to ecosystems than the solar arrays (and wind farms) that are coming under more widespread attack. When the economy-of-scale with wind power [no-glossary]led[/no-glossary] to larger and larger wind turbines, opponents of these installations took to referring to them as “industrial wind power.” Whenever I see a letter-to-the-editor or news story that uses this phrase, I can tell that it’s going to have an anti-wind bias.Whether its marring their views of pristine mountains, blighting their night sky with blinking red lights, causing bird and bat fatalities, or producing the somewhat mythical “infrasound,” opponents almost universally refer to these wind farms using an industrial moniker. So, I’m becoming troubled by recent reference to “industrial solar” in describing the larger photovoltaic (PV) installations that are cropping up in Vermont and nationwide. Some opposition seems to be emerging, for example, to a 2 megawatt (MW) array that’s being proposed for Brattleboro, and I’m hearing more and more such concerns nationally.last_img read more

Tag: 上海龙凤 How Clemson And Washington Can Still Make The College Football Playoff

Each week in this space, we examine all the things a certain contending team needs to have happen in order for it to make the College Football Playoff. This week’s edition is a double feature starring the Clemson Tigers and Washington Huskies, each of which fell out of the AP Top 5 after suffering upset losses last week.Current situations: After Clemson and Washington lost to Syracuse and Arizona State, respectively, the two teams’ College Football Playoff odds were dented pretty badly. According to FiveThirtyEight’s prediction model, the Tigers now have just a 29 percent chance of making the playoff (down from 55 percent going into the weekend), and the Huskies are at 24 percent (down from 43 percent). Six teams are currently ahead of the Tigers and Huskies in our CFP probabilities, and Clemson isn’t even the favorite to win its conference anymore. (Miami has slightly higher odds of winning the ACC.) The relatively straightforward paths for both teams to return to the CFP have now run into major complications. What the Tigers and Huskies can do: As always, winning out is paramount to getting into the playoff. If Clemson runs the table — which our model gives a 20 percent chance of happening — it will have a 97 percent probability of making the CFP, a near-lock. The Tigers’ trip to NC State on Nov. 4 is easily their biggest obstacle to that; they win that game in 95 percent of our simulations that have them going to the playoff, while they only win it 49 percent of the time in sims where they don’t make the CFP. (That 46 percentage point difference makes it the highest-leverage game left in Clemson’s season.) It should also be noted that these numbers assume that Clemson’s star QB Kelly Bryant is healthy; he was knocked out of the Syracuse loss but seems to be progressing quickly in his recovery. For Washington, the odds of winning all its remaining games are a bit higher (21 percent), although the Huskies also have a less guaranteed playoff path — only 87 percent CFP odds — even if they do win out. Washington’s most important game comes at Stanford on Nov. 10, a matchup the Huskies win 96 percent of the time in their playoff-bound simulations but only 40 percent of the time in universes where they don’t make the playoff. They could benefit slightly from anything that boosts their odds of winning the ACC, however, including losses by NC State and Miami. And any wins by Auburn will automatically help Clemson because of its head-to-head victory against those other Tigers in September.Washington, on the other hand, could use more of an assist from afar. There are two categories for these kinds of games: Some — like Stanford losing to Cal in Week 12 — tend to be entangled with implications about the strength of a team’s own opponents.1For instance, consider a situation in which Team A and Team B are conference rivals. Team B might be less likely to win an unrelated game in a simulation where Team A makes the playoff, because Team B is also likely to be weaker in a universe where Team A beats them head-to-head. (Arizona State beating USC also fits this category, because it makes Washington’s loss to the Sun Devils look less bad.) But the more interesting ones come where the connection isn’t obvious: Georgia Tech beating Georgia, for instance, helps Washington because it hurts an undefeated Bulldogs team that currently sits ahead of the Huskies in our playoff odds. 11Florida State93.562.3+31.2 13South Carolina90.167.3+22.8 12Utah96.782.0+14.7 12Wake Forest def. USC28.225.6+2.6 One good piece of news for both Clemson and Washington is that, of the six teams ahead of them in the CFP probabilities, all but likely Big 12 winner TCU hail from just two conferences: the Big Ten and SEC. Since the playoff selection committee puts an emphasis on conference championships, some of those teams will by definition see their odds plummet before the Final Four is chosen — we just don’t know which ones yet. So there aren’t many universes where both, say, Alabama and Georgia make the playoff, or both Ohio State and Penn State (to say nothing of Wisconsin). But Washington and Clemson may also find themselves as enemies down the season’s final stretch; with one loss apiece, they could very likely be competing for the same CFP slot. Indeed, Clemson only makes the playoff in 23 percent of the simulations where Washington is in, versus 31 percent of the sims where Washington misses out. (That same split is 18 percent versus 25 percent from Washington’s perspective.) With only four teams standing at the end of the season, every loss counts — a lesson the Tigers and Huskies might have learned the hard way last weekend.Check out our latest college football predictions. read more

Tag: 上海龙凤 Ozils agent hits back against Bayern president

first_imgThe agent of Mesut Ozil has hit back against the “foolish” comments made by the Bayern Munich president Uli HoenessOzil stunned the football world on Sunday by announcing his decision to retire from international football on social media following the criticism that had been aimed at him following Germany’s dreadful World Cup campaign that had seen them being eliminated from the group stages for the first time in 80 years. The 29-year-old claimed that he been a victim of “racism and disrespect” by the country’s supporters with the German football federation (DFB) later coming out to deny such allegations.Ozil, who is of Turkish descent, has been the subject of much criticism in Germany following his meeting with the controversial Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in London prior to the start of the competition. And Ozil claimed that he has been even used as the scapegoat for the country’s poor defence of their world crown this summer. But Hoeness instead, of supporting the troubled playmaker, lashed out against Ozil and said that he has “been playing dirt for years”.Now, Dr Erkut Sogut, Ozil’s agent has called Hoeness’ assessment of his client as unfair and pointed out everything that the former Real Madrid player has achieved in his career.RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, Robert LewadowskiMatch Preview: RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 RB Leipzig will have the chance to prove their title-winning capabilities when they host Bayern Munich today at 18:30 (CET).In a statement to Goal, he said: “The comments of Mr Hoeness miss the point completely, as they have absolutely nothing to do with football. He is trying to divert attention away from the real issue, the issue of racism and discrimination in Germany, which is resurging once again within everyday German society.“As Mesut said in his statement, he accepts reasonable and fair criticism of his football, and deals with that as part of the job. However, Mr Hoeness cannot even provide any actual evidence to back up his foolish statements that are clearly exaggerated. In this case, the stats are clear. Twenty-three goals, 40 assists – which is a German record – and five-time German player of the year – three of which come after 2014.“He claims that Mesut has been a ‘ghost’ for years, but what ‘ghost’ wins all these awards and has this much success? Mesut created more chances in the 2018 World Cup per 90 minutes than any other player, but, of course, he singles him out for criticism. As the president of Bayern Munich is it not best to focus on the performance of his own players seeing as eight of the Germany team play for the club.“If Mesut is such a bad player, what does this say about his opinion on Joachim Low, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho? These are three elite managers who praise Mesut as one of the best in his position. It is laughable that he thinks he is more qualified to judge footballing abilities than these people, with fabricated statistics.“The facts speak for themselves and anyway who is he to speak about Mesut in this way? These lies are cheap, stereotypical and baseless comments – made without any foundations – that allow hurtful news to spread.“Mr Hoeness, we will not waste any more time or energy talking about a subject clearly you know nothing about. Not only is he a disgrace to himself, but also and more importantly a shame to German football and the people of Germany.”last_img read more
