first_imgPHOENIX >> Carl Crawford hit a home run in his first at-bat Saturday and later left with tightness in his right hamstring, which has been the story of Dodgers’ offense in a nutshell this year.September has been a story unto itself. With 34 players active on a deep roster, the club’s depth chart hardly seems tested at all when one player goes down. The latest hamstring to bite the dust wasn’t badly bitten, either; Crawford said he could play Sunday if needed.Starting pitcher Mike Bolsinger also went down early, but the Dodgers built a 7-0 lead after three innings and went on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-5 at Chase Field.“This ballpark is a lot like Colorado,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “You see plenty of numbers. It’s a hitting ballpark. You feel like the game’s never really over.” “After they started high-fiving it really kind of sunk in. That’s when I realized it,” said Seager, who was left alone for a moment when he reached the Dodgers’ dugout, in line with recent tradition.Seager got the home run ball back from the fan in right field who caught it. A different fan helped him even more. On the pitch prior to his home run, Seager hit a pop fly into foul territory in left field. Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta had his glove in position to catch the ball, but a red-clan fan sitting in the first row of seats reached up and caught it.“I need to thank that fan down there,” said Seager, who finished 4 for 4 with a double, a stolen base and two singles in addition to his home run.The Dodgers were poised to run away with the game before Arizona made it interesting.Bolsinger, who was drafted and developed in the Diamondbacks organization, allowed seven hits and three runs in 3 2/3 innings, perhaps dampening his case to grab the fifth starter’s job over the season’s final three weeks. Four of the hits came in the fateful fourth inning.“Leaving them up and hanging like I was, it’s a small adjustment,” Bolsinger said. “I’m not too worried about it. It’s never happened like this. I’ve always had good command of my off-speed pitches.”Howell relieved Bolsinger the game with the bases loaded. He threw one pitch and retired Peralta on a line drive to Crawford in left field, ending the inning.Former Dodgers pitcher Rubby De La Rosa (12-8) was torched for six runs in two innings, the shortest start of his career.Alex Guerrero, who received an MRI on his right calf muscle earlier in the day, came off the bench to deliver an RBI double in the ninth inning.Every Dodgers starting position player had at least one hit except for catcher Yasmani Grandal, who extended his streak of at-bats without a hit to 35. Along with Crawford, he’s expected to get a day off Sunday when the Diamondbacks send left-hander Patrick Corbin to the mound. That explains why Mattingly handled his bullpen so delicately over the final five and one-third innings. J.P. Howell (6-1), Jim Johnson, Juan Nicasio, Luis Avilan, Yimi Garcia, Chris Hatcher and Kenley Jansen all pitched in while the Dodgers pounded out 15 hits, including four home runs, ending a two-game losing streak. Why use Jansen in a non-save situation?“Why not?” Mattingly replied. “We talked about this ballpark. Four (runs) in this ballpark is not that much. This is September, not April. Jansen hadn’t pitched in three days. Anytime you have a chance to put a win on the board, you do it.”The San Francisco Giants maintained their 7 1/2-game deficit in the National League West by beating San Diego earlier in the day. The Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the division is 14.Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, Joc Pederson and Corey Seager all hit home runs. Pederson’s was his first home run since Sept. 1. Seager’s was his first in the major leagues.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
