Tag: 上海后花园夜生活 Battling wins for Yorkshire and Warwickshire

first_imgYorkshire and Warwickshire battled their way to wins on the first day of the English Senior Men’s County Championship at Goswick Golf Club, Northumberland. They came out on top in two exciting matches, with Yorkshire withstanding a spirited charge by Sussex to win 5-4, while Warwickshire staged a terrific fight-back to defeat Gloucestershire 5.5-3.5.Both foursomes resulted in a 2.5-0.5 scoreline – in favour of Yorkshire and Gloucestershire. But any thoughts that this margin might provide an easy route to a win vanished as the singles got underway.Warwickshire may have been on the back foot after the foursomes, but they created the upset of the day by winning five of the six singles.Andrew Carman (pictured top) set the ball rolling when he took charge of his game on the fifth, steadily increasing his lead to win 4/3. Then Tony Allen and Martin Fell followed with wins of 2/1 which moved Warwickshire into the lead for the first time. The tension heightened as Rob Soen and Graham Taylor approached the final holes. Soen was all square after 16 but made the crucial breakthrough in his game when he won the 17th to set up a 1hole win. Taylor, meanwhile, was all square after 14, but won 15 and 16 with a birdie, par sequence to set up his 2/1 win.Gloucestershire’s Hugh Purvis took his team’s only point of the singles in the final game, but the victory was Warwickshire’s.This is Warwickshire’s first appearance at Senior County Finals and team captain Mark Reynolds commented: “I am absolutely thrilled. We needed 4.5 points this afternoon and we managed to get five. Everyone played for each other and pulled for each other.”In the other match, Sussex set out with similar aims and, led by former international Martin Galway, were hot off the blocks. As the first players went through the 12th the team were up in five of the six games and Colin Jones typified the mood as he set off in blistering style with four birdies in the first four holes.Galway and Jones both completed big wins, but Yorkshire were determined to halt the Sussex charge.Andy King (pictured left) was on top form and didn’t lose a hole as he defeated his Sussex opponent 6/5. Then Johnny Lawrence signed off with a birdie two on the 15th for his 4/3 win, which ensured Yorkshire would at least halve the match.Andy Whitworth provided the essential half point for victory in a game which included six birdies between the two players. Whitworth trailed early on and was three down after seven holes, but he turned his fortunes around when he won four holes in a row on the back nine.Yorkshire captain Tony Greenhalgh said afterwards: “It was a super win, so exciting. It was inevitable that Sussex would give it a good go, but we have a fantastic team spirit with no egos.”The golfers were not the only attraction on Goswick’s excellent links. Tag: 上海后花园夜生活 Wendell Smith: Major League Baseball’s unsung hero

first_imgWENDELL SMITHWhile April 1947 is considered the date on which the walls of segregation came tumbling down in Major League Baseball, the catalyst for the radical change took place many years before that and little or nothing to do with Jackie Robinson and Branch Rickey. The spark that ignited the brushfire of integration took place at a relatively obscure American Legion All-Star game near Detroit, Mich., back in 1933. It was then and there that a budding young pitching star handcuffed an opposing team with a 1-0 masterpiece. The talented hurler was named Wendell Smith and what transpired that day would prove to have a profound effect on him, the national pastime and, to a larger degree, the whole of American society.According to Jules Tygiel, author of “Baseball’s Great Experiment,” present that day was a scout from the Detroit Tigers who, though impressed with Smith’s prowess, inked a contract with Smith’s catcher Mike Tresh…and the losing pitcher. Tresh, it should be noted, went on to play and coach in the Major Leagues. His son, Tom Tresh, likewise carved out a mediocre career in the bigs mostly as the shortstop for the New York Yankees.last_img read more

Tag: 上海后花园夜生活 Uber and Lyft Will Collaborate With Public Transportation So You Dont Have

first_imgMarch 16, 2016 5 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global “When I was 15 or 16, your whole life revolved around saving up money to drive a car,” says David Plouffe, the chief advisor for and a board member at Uber. “Your entire social life revolved around the car. That is changing.”Indeed: Ridesourcing technology companies such as Uber and Lyft are trying to build a future in which the idea of owning a car is a bit nostalgic. For consumers, not owning a car can be a big cost-saver. And for cities, getting more consumers to use shared modes of transportation is a way to decrease congestion. To encourage Americans to detach with their generations-long obsession with car ownership, Uber and Lyft will be working ever more closely to integrate with public transportation systems. The San Francisco-based ridesourcing technology rivals say that means they will have to become the last-mile solution in areas where public transportation is just out of reach. If Uber and Lyft can become an intuitive last-mile solution for consumers, the idea of not owning a car will become a reasonable option. “When you reach that tipping point of three or more shared modes [of transportation] that someone uses, that’s when they get rid of the vehicle, and that is the sort of robust ecosystem that is starting to develop now in major cities and increasingly metropolitan areas and suburban areas,” says Emily Castor, director of transportation policy for Lyft.Related: Transportation ‘Supersharers’ Are Also SupersaversDallas is a front-runner in the integration of ridesourcing technology with local public transportation in the U.S. Within the Dallas-metro area, it’s seamless for a customer to book a ride for the first or last mile of a trip on the public transit system. While Portland doesn’t have the same system integration as Dallas, one out of every four Uber trips begins or ends at a local rail station, says Plouffe. In Washington, D.C., 60 percent of Uber trips are within a quarter mile of a metro station, he adds.  Uber and Lyft say that they do not compete with public transportation networks. Instead, the companies need to work with regional mass transit. “This is a huge opportunity for public-private collaboration,” says Castor.Overwhelmingly, people use ridesourcing technology platforms such as Uber and Lyft when public transportation is not otherwise available. “There was a clear peak in ridesourcing demand between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. on weekends,” says Michael Melaniphy, the president and CEO of American Public Transportation Association, the national public transit advocacy group. The trend held across all seven cities that were surveyed for the report: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles,San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C. “This is the time of greatest demand overall and public transit is often unavailable in those hours.”Related: Alcohol Drives Use of Uber and LyftPublic transportation is still cheaper than ordering an Uber or Lyft in many instances. “Five bucks gets you all of our system all day. That’s a pretty good deal. Even our ridesharing colleagues can’t match that,” says Morgan Lyons, assistant vice president for community engagement for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit, chuckling to the Uber and Lyft representatives. “And so folks like to use that.”As more and more regional transportation systems bring their public transportation ticketing systems online, that will facilitate the integration of public transportation systems with Uber and Lyft. To goal is for a consumer to be able to book a ride that involves a combination of public transportation and ridesourcing through a single app.   Castor, Plouffe, Lyons and Melaniphy were speaking on a conference call with reporters timed to the release of a report on that very topic, titled “Shared Mobility and the Transformation of Public Transit.” This new research paper is by the public-interest advocacy group, Shared-Use Mobility Center, released this week on behalf of American Public Transportation Association, and paid for with money from the Federal Transit Administration.“Instead of needing to use a physical fare card, already in many cities, like Dallas, you can pay for your transit ticket on an app, and that really is important for our ability to create partnerships with transit because that brings them into our world,” says Castor. “It brings them into the world of technology-based transportation services where we can become increasingly interoperable.”Related: This New App Lets You Summon Your Grandma (or Tinder Date) Via a Prepaid Uber RideTransforming the transportation networks in the U.S. will take more than just interoperable technology, though. It also depends on a shift in user behavior.“Where we would like to see this go is that you have just got neighbors driving neighbors,” says Plouffe. The average Uber driver clocks fewer than 10 hours per month and that average is going to continue to decline. “Our view is that over the next few years, you are not even going to think about becoming an Uber driver. You are just going to say, ‘I am going to turn on my car, turn on my phone and if I can pick up someone along the way, that’s what I am going to do.’”To be sure, that’s a reality that Uber would benefit from. But while improving technology and making networks integrated is a virtual given, changing consumer behavior is a far slower, more unpredictable art.center_img Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Tag: 上海后花园夜生活 Microsoft introduces Remote Development extensions to make remote development easier on VS

first_imgYesterday, Microsoft announced the preview of Remote Development extension pack for VS Code to enable developers to use a container, remote machine, or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) as a full-featured development environment. Currently, developers will need to use the Insiders build for remote development until the stable version is available. The Insiders builds are the versions that are shipped daily with latest features and bug fixes. Why these VS Code extensions are needed? Developers often choose containers or remote virtual machines configured with specific development and runtime stacks as their development environment. This is an optimal choice because configuring such development environments locally could be too difficult or sometimes even impossible. Data scientists also require remote environments to do their work efficiently. They build and train data models and to do that they need to analyze large datasets. This demands massive storage and compute service, which a local machine can hardly provide. One option to solve this problem is using Remote Desktop but it can be sometimes laggy. Developers often use Vim and SSH or local tools with file synchronization, but these can also be slow and error-prone. There are browser-based tools that can be used in some scenarios, but they lack the richness and familiarity that desktop tools provide. VS Code Remote Development extensions pack Looking at these challenges, the VS Code team came up with a solution that suggested that VS Code should run in two places at once. One instance will run the developer tools locally and the other will connect to a set of development services running remotely in the context of a physical or virtual machine. Following are three extensions for working with remote workspaces: Remote-WSL Remote – WSL allows you to use WSL as a full development environment directly from VS Code. It runs commands and extensions directly in WSL so developers don’t have to think about pathing issues, binary compatibility, or other cross-OS challenges. With this extension, developers will be able to edit files located in WSL or the mounted Windows filesystem and also run and debug Linux-based applications on Windows. Remote-SSH Remote – SSH allows you to open folders or workspaces hosted on any remote machine, VM, or container with a running SSH server. It directly runs commands and other extensions on the remote machine so you don’t need to have the source code on your local machine. It enables you to use larger, faster, or more specialized hardware than your local machine. You can also quickly switch between different remote development environments and safely make updates. Remote-Containers Remote – Containers allows you to use a Docker container as your development container. It starts or attaches to a development container, which is running a well-defined tool and runtime stack. All your workspace files are copied or cloned into the container, or mounted from the local file system. To configure the development container you can use a ‘devcontainer.json’ file.
