Despite the ongoing surge in infections and deaths, many states in Brazil are pressing ahead with plans to reopen their economies after months of painful stay-at-home measures to contain the virus. But many experts warn it is too soon.”We’re sending people to the slaughterhouse,” said Domingos Alves, a professor of medicine at the University of Sao Paulo and member of a scientific committee monitoring the crisis, COVID-19 Brasil.”The curve in Brazil is still rising sharply. We’re still in the first wave.”Brazil has struggled to set a strategy for dealing with the pandemic.President Jair Bolsonaro, who has famously compared the virus to a “little flu,” has clashed with state and local authorities over their stay-at-home measures. The far-right leader argues the economic impact of such measures risks being worse than the virus itself.Lately, however, cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the hardest-hit in Brazil, have begun gradually lifting emergency measures, even though the number of infections and deaths is still rising sharply.Shoppers have swarmed commercial districts in Sao Paulo in recent days, while Rio’s famous beaches were packed last weekend, raising concerns about waning adherence to social distancing guidelines. Brazil registered 42,725 cases of the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the health ministry said Wednesday, as experts warned the country was exiting lockdown too soon.Brazil, which has had more people killed in the pandemic than any country except the United States, also reported 1,185 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing its total death toll to 53,830.The jump in infections was the second-highest in a single day in Brazil since the start of the pandemic. However, officials said the record — 54,771 cases, on June 19 — was due to system backlogs that had led to under-reporting for previous days. Topics : Brazil now has nearly 1.2 million infections in total.Experts say under-testing in the country of 212 million people means the real numbers are probably much higher. The Pan American Health Organization’s head of communicable diseases, Marcos Espinal, urged Brazil Wednesday to carry out more tests. The health ministry later said it would start testing 100 percent of even mild suspected cases in the public health system.

Bring in a professional cleaning — you don’t want your house looking like a dog’s breakfast during an open home.More from newsMould, age, not enough to stop 17 bidders fighting for this home5 hours agoBuyers ‘crazy’ not to take govt freebies, says 28-yr-old investor5 hours agoMATT MCCANN’S TOP 9 TIPS FOR MAXIMISING SALE PRICETHE CRUCIAL1. Kitchen improvements. A kitchen can make or break a property’s sale. Sellers should consider replacing old appliances with newer ones, but it’s important to look at the overall condition of drawers and cupboards.2. General repairs and maintenance. Fixing any visible flaws with the property will make it more attractive to buyers, who are usually looking for something ‘move in ready’. While doing an appraisal, a good real estate agent can spot common issues that may need repair.3. Advertising and marketing. The general rule is that approximately one per cent of the anticipated sale price should be spent on marketing. A good agent will talk through possible strategies, and it should start with professional photography.4. Basic landscaping. A well-maintained garden will leave a lasting impression, but there is no need to go overboard as the cost might not be recouped. Studies show that 78 per cent of Australians would prefer to live in a home that has a garden and greenery, so buyers should lay new lawn over dead patches, mulch garden beds and plant fresh flowers.THE COST EFFECTIVE5. Style outdoor areas. Give outdoor areas some attention by purchasing new cushions for the outdoor furniture set — they are extremely affordable and can breathe fresh new life into the area and make the outdoors feel liveable.6. Bring in the green. Indoor plants are affordable, easy to maintain and will brighten up a living room or bathroom — they can also be taken to the seller’s new home. Succulents, mother-in-law’s tongue, philodendron and orchards are all very popular and can fill nooks that might be difficult to furnish.7. Use lighting to create atmosphere. When showing off a property, it’s a good idea to have all the lights turned on to emphasise how bright the home can be. Replace expired light bulbs with new, energy efficient ones, or bulbs with higher wattage.8. Enlist the help of a professional cleaner. A simple and inexpensive way to instantly maximise value and bring a property back to life is to give it a professional clean. Carpets should be steamed, bathroom and kitchens polished, windows wiped, and floors and walls washed. Exteriors may need to be pressure cleaned.WHEN TO STOP9. Renovations. Sellers can overcapitalise on renovations; a bathroom can be updated at a reasonable cost, however, extending a living area or adding on another level may not be worth it.
