first_imgSpeaking to a large crowd in the Mendoza College of Business’s Jordan Auditorium on Thursday, Archbishop Charles J. Brown reflected on his mission in serving as the apostolic nuncio to Ireland and the intersection between modern Ireland and the Catholic Church. Titled, “The Catholic Church in Ireland and Pope Francis: Legacy and Transformation,” the lecture was part of the annual Keeley Vatican Lecture series sponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies.Brown, a 1981 Notre Dame graduate, addressed the cultural and spiritual challenges in the Vatican’s relationship with Ireland and his job as the Holy See’s official diplomat to Ireland.“The apostolic nuncio has two roles: to be the pope’s representative to the local Catholic community and to be the pope’s representative to the sovereign government,” he said.Brown said when he arrived in Ireland and assumed his official position in January 2012, he made it his mission to be involved in Ireland’s Catholic community, accepting as many invitations as possible to visit local churches, schools and other important community institutions.“I made it my priority to be open and accessible so that I could learn about the needs of the Church in Ireland,” he said.Brown said the Church’s historical role in Ireland is “daunting in its complexity.”He noted the dichotomy among Christendom, the cultural and social dominance of Christian values and Christianity itself, which he defined as faith in the person of Jesus Christ and his Church. He referenced a famous homily by Archbishop Michael Neary of Tuam, which bemoaned the death of Christendom in modern-day secular Ireland.Brown said the collapse of Christendom, however, is distinct from the state of Christianity in 20th-century Ireland. From the 1930s to the 1960s, he said Mass attendance was high, large numbers of men and women entered religious life and “a Catholic ethos dominated Ireland.”“Ireland’s traditionally rural and agrarian culture with a conservative outlook and widespread opposition to British dominance were both major factors in this,” Brown said.Brown said by the the 1970s, Irish society became more secular. Causes of this transformation included immigration of American-born Irish back to Ireland and the introduction of their more secular lifestyles, as well as the advent of increased electrical usage, which brought the secular values of the media industry to the entire nation.Brown said that the emergence of abuses among the clergy, particularly pedophilia, damaged the Church’s cultural influence.“No matter what the issue is, when a Catholic voice is raised, the inevitable response is that they’re trying to bring back the era of clerical dominance,” he said.Brown said Pope Francis’s messages of freedom and humility in Christ has a broad appeal. He said he has hope for the future of the Church, particularly in Ireland.“There is a palpable desire in the Irish people for meaning beyond the merely material and the physical,” he saidTags: Charles J. Tag: 上海北桥鸡2020 Avoid the frustrations of fear-based planning

first_imgIt’s estimated that 90% of companies fail to execute their strategic plans successfully. With statistics like this, it’s not surprising that only 2% of leaders surveyed express confidence their organization will achieve 80-100% of the goals they set. Unfortunately, credit unions aren’t immune to these discouraging trends—which is why many leadership teams encounter resistance during strategic planning sessions.Resistance is usually a sign that it’s time to pause, regroup and gain perspective. In many sessions, bold new ideas are introduced, and the board and leadership teams have a hard time imagining how they’ll even attempt something so audacious. Resistance rarely happens because the leaders don’t care; it surfaces because fear causes them to freeze.Fear-based paralysis is real. It’s one of the primary reasons strategic plans fail. When leaders give in to the fear of the unknown, they stay in their comfort zones because they don’t have a reference point for what they’re trying to accomplish. As funny as it sounds, organizations refuse to try something new simply because they’ve never done it before. Tag: 上海北桥鸡2020 EPL: Gunners invade Palace

first_imgRelatedPosts Runarsson joins Arsenal on four-year deal Arsenal, Wolves want Michael Olise Akpom pens Middlesbrough loan deal Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal Venue: Selhurst Park Kick off: 1:30PMArsenal make the short trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace this afternoon knowing that victory will be enough to move ahead of their hosts in the Premier League table. As well as having the opportunity to move four points clear of the Gunners, Palace could move into the top six if they prevail in this London derby. A few weeks ago, Arsenal fans would have felt that it was unrealistic for their side to keep back-to-back clean sheets, as well as continuing to play with a style which is easy on the eye. However, that is exactly what Mikel Arteta has achieved during his short time at the Emirates Stadium with victories being recorded over Manchester United and Leeds United. While there were times against Leeds when Arsenal were fortunate to avoid going behind, they rode out the storm before claiming a 1-0 success over the Championship high-flyers. That result came five days after a dominant 2-0 triumph over Manchester United, which helped the North London outfit move back into the top half of the table. With Sheffield United and Chelsea to follow the visit to Palace, neither Arteta or his players will be getting carried away with their recent upturn in results and performances, but it feels pivotal that the Spaniard has began his reign by lifting the mood at the club. Despite there still being nine points between themselves and fourth-placed Chelsea, achieving a Champions League spot come the end of the season no longer feels impossible, providing that the team can kick on in the coming weeks. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s public commitment to the cause is also a welcome boost for Arteta, who will naturally have concerns over where the Gabon international sees his future. Nevertheless, in the short term at least, the captain is capable of producing a scoring run which can help Arsenal creep up the table, and another win on Saturday will leave their rivals looking over their shoulder. From Palace’s perspective, they have their own opportunity to once again become a factor in the race for the European places, despite winning just once in half-a-dozen outings. That victory – against West Ham United on Boxing Day – came courtesy of a wonder goal from Jordan Ayew in the closing seconds, highlighting what it has taken for the Eagles to get maximum points on the board of late. While four draws have also helped their cause, the stalemates have been versus Watford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Southampton and Norwich City, games where they would have been hoping for much more. Roy Hodgson will feel like his side have missed an opportunity to get themselves among the sides competing with Chelsea for the final Champions League position, with just eight points separating the two teams ahead of the weekend. That said, had it been offered to him before the start of the campaign, Hodgson would have jumped at the opportunity to be sitting in ninth place heading into the second weekend of January. When the players take to the pitch on Saturday, there may be some disappointment lingering from the defeat to Derby County in the FA Cup, with Palace now having lost two home cup ties to EFL opposition this season. In the grand scheme of things, however, it gives Hodgson the chance to prioritise the Premier League at a time when he has seen a number of his first-team squad suffer with injuries. While that may ease come the weekend, the pressure is on his players to deliver maximum points, especially with a visit to Manchester City coming up seven days later. Crystal Palace possible XI: Guaita, Kelly, Tomkins, Cahill, Riedeweld, McCarthy, Kouyate, McArthur, Ayew, Benteke, Zaha. Arsenal possible XI: Leno, Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Luiz, Kolasinac, Torreira, Xhaka, Pepe, Ozil, Aubameyang, Lacazette.Tags: ArsenalCrystal PalaceEPLMikel ArtetaRoy Hodgsonlast_img read more

first_imgFacebook156Tweet0Pin0Submitted by SideWalkToday, SideWalk volunteers helped their 1,500th participant escape homelessness and move into a safe place to call home.“This is a big thing,” said Phil Owen, Executive Director of SideWalk. “People on the streets rely on SideWalk as the fastest path to leave homelessness behind, and we’re proud to have served so many people. We did this because of our committed team of volunteers and strong community support, and I want to thank them for keeping us going.”SideWalk’s Rapid Re-Housing program, started in 2012, helps on average about 300 people per year move into a new home. It offers advocacy, support, and small amounts of short-term rental assistance to help people experiencing homelessness overcome financial barriers to moving in to a safe place to call home. Roughly 80% of the people served via SideWalk’s Rapid Re-Housing program are still off the streets one year after placement. Currently, accounting for all costs such as direct cash assistance and overhead, it costs SideWalk on average $1,047 to help one person experiencing homelessness escape the streets – period.Indicating its continued improvement, SideWalk volunteers helped their 500th person escape homelessness in September 2015, after 3 years of operations. 4 years later, SideWalk volunteers helped another 1000 people.“We won’t rest on our laurels, though,” Phil Owen said. “While we’re proud of our accomplishments, we know the need for our work will continue. If you’re experiencing homelessness, SideWalk volunteers are here to help.” People experiencing homelessness can visit http://walkthurston.org/gethelp to learn more about SideWalk’s work and how their volunteers help.last_img read more

Tag: 上海北桥鸡2020 Sports India Exclusive with Anthony Amalraj: Use hypnotherapy to train my mind to react…

Powered by Firework Anthony Amalraj needs no introduction in the world of Table Tennis. The 34-year old veteran won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia.Advertisement Currently ranked No. 100 worldwide and is behind A Sharath Kamal (No. 31), G Sathiyan (No.32) and Harmeet Desai (No. 72), and No. 4 in India. Amalraj is spending his time wisely under the current state-imposed lockdown because of the Coronavirus outbreak. The Arjuna awardee has played alongside some of the best table tennis players in India.Sports India Show had the opportunity to chat with Anthony Amalraj, where he talks about different aspects on Table Tennis and how important it is to maintain mental fitness apart from physical.Advertisement 1.) How are you dealing with the lockdown? Is it frustrating to you?The first month of the lockdown was good because there was a lot of tournament last year. I played nearly 17 to 18 international tournament and then the national ranking tournament and I was very much tired as well, So I was able to spend my time at home resting and reading.Advertisement But now the lockdown has lasted almost more than two and a half months, so it’s getting difficult now because for the first time in my life I am staying at home for more than two months and not even stepping out of the house, So it’s really very difficult. But I have started training and I have a small gym at my home, So I have been working out. For the past three to four days I have also started practicing table tennis as well.2.) What sort of training have you been doing indoors?I have a bicycle, cross trainer at my home and it is very beneficial for the core. For table tennis, we have a lot of tournaments, the intensity is very high, we have a tournament every week. So for the last two years, it was very difficult for me to focus on fitness because we need a gap as well to recover and if something goes wrong with our techniques, we need to work on that as well. The ranking system in table tennis has also changed for the last two-years. Previously it was very different as we can play an international tournament when we need to and keep our rankings better, but now we have to play every week and every ten days we have a tournament.  So the last two years were really tiring for me and I wasn’t able to work on my specific techniques. So I have been utilizing the time under lockdown for the past two-months to improve myself. 3.) You work extensively with a hypnotherapist, can you tell us how it has helped you and if you would recommend other athletes to use their services as well?We always ask questions like why China is better than us at sports. The thing is they’re advanced in every aspect be it fitness, nutrition, coaches and mental fitness. But when I was young, like before 15-20 years, it was like play more, more, more… But for the last 10 years, the trend has changed and we are focusing more on technique. Before it was quantity training and we got better coaches, training and we improved our knowledge, but now after our understanding has improved and we have developed, we are now focusing more on qualitative training. But now for the last five years, we are focusing more on physical training. However, even after all this, there’s an important aspect that needs to be looked at and that is mental fitness. For example, to keep our body healthy we have to eat food everyday and workout to remain physically fit. But in all this, we forget about our mental health because everything is from the mind. Yoga and meditation can only give us temporary relief. Before the match, many players used to meditate, but that will only work for you up to a particular stage. In sports, an athlete has to be ready for numerous situations. For example, in Table Tennis, when a game is 3-all 10-all, I cannot think what my mind is thinking or how I am thinking or how I am reacting, and at that particular point in time, I cannot change and everything that I do should happen automatically. For that, I have to train my mind, and with hypnotherapy, my mind is already prepared for this pressure moment. The mind works very deeply and goes into the subconscious stage. In pressure stages, I used to lose matches but then I realized that I was doing good on the table with the technique, my fitness was excellent, but I felt that I was lacking somewhere. Even yoga and meditation weren’t helping, so this hypnotherapy is like going to the subconsciousness of the mind and changing everything….whatever the negative thoughts are, or how you’re approaching the situation. So you can see in the last ten years, my performance has gotten better, be it the CWG, Asian Games or other international tournaments. For me, it took a little time to reach that stage, but I have been getting better.4.) You started the year great as you broke into the top 100, tell me about that feeling? How does it feel to be counted amongst the 100 best Table Tennis players on the planet? It is everyone’s dream. For example, at first, I was aiming to become a National champion which I became, then I was aiming to win a CWG medal and I won and then the Asian Games medal which also I won. But today there’s so much fluctuations happening in the ratings. In 2017, I was in the top 70 and I was playing so good and suddenly my peak has gone down and I stumbled back to 120. However, in the last one and a half years, I have been struggling with the rankings. If the old ranking system were in use, I would definitely be in the top 60 for sure. In the last two years, I have been consistently winning against the better players but with the change in the ranking system so many players are suffering. But even after that, breaking into the top 100 gives me motivation. I cannot say satisfaction because if I am satisfied by being in the top 100 I won’t get better. My last tournament was Qatar opens and it’s a platinum tournament. There I was the only Indian to qualify. There I defeated the No. 53 and No. 65 ranked player there and eventually lost to world No.6 ranked player. I cancelled the decision to play at Oman Open because the Coronavirus situation was getting serious and I didn’t want to take any risk. Had I played that event, my rankings would have improved to No. 85 or something.5.) Prior to the Coronavirus saga, you were riding on a hot streak having won two medals at CWG 2018 and a Bronze at Asian Games and were en route to the Olympics. Do you feel the lockdown has affected your momentum? Once the lockdown eases, how early do you feel you can get your flow back?If you see every player has been affected by the lockdown. So If I go through some problems, other players are also getting affected by this. There are thousands and thousands of players going through the same situation. However, it still differs from players to players. For example, I have started service practice and from next week onwards, I will start playing for 45 minutes to an hour and then I will increase the intensity. I have my own club as well, but given the current situations, it’s important to take care of the people coming to the club as well. However, at this time it is important for the mind and heart to not get broken. This Coronavirus situation has been a problem for the last three months, but there are instances where the players get injured and have to undergo surgery and they have to remain out of action for seven to eight months. However, after coming out of long hiatus, they are able to perform at their very best. So a three months coronavirus lockdown shouldn’t be an excuse for loss in momentum.5.) Most casual fans often have this question about Table Tennis doubles player, how do you guys choose your partner? Do you guys train alongside numerous people and chose the ones you are most comfortable with or is there any other procedure? It’s about whoever you feel comfortable with. Whoever players we get better with or develop an understanding of the game. Before I was playing with Sarath, but nowadays, I am playing more with Sathiyan Gnanasekaran. So his game and my game is very similar…Like I enjoy playing near the table, he also does the same. He plays fast like me and our mentality matches. Like even we haven’t trained together for a tournament, we play well because we have developed an understanding and play according to the situation that arises on the table. ALSO READ:Table tennis ace Sharath Kamal battles Coronavirus fears to win Oman Open    Advertisementlast_img read more
