Month: July 2019 Kejriwal Terms EC Biased Asks Why Campaign in WB Ordered to be

first_img aapAmit Shaharvind kejriwalBJP First Published: May 16, 2019, 9:37 PM IST New Delhi/Moga: Accusing the Election Commission of being “biased”, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal asked why the poll panel ordered campaign be stopped in West Bengal at 10 pm Thursday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rallies in the state. In the first such action in India’s electoral history, the poll panel on Wednesday invoked Article 324 of the Constitution to end campaigning in nine West Bengal constituencies at 10 pm on Thursday, a day before its scheduled deadline, following violence between BJP and TMC workers in Kolkata on Tuesday. Polling for the nine Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal will be held on May 19.During his election campaign at Moga in Punjab, Kejriwal told reporters that he strongly condemns the “attitude” of the EC.”We strongly condemn the attitude of the Election Commission. Why was the campaign ordered to be stopped after Modiji’s rallies. We have never seen this biased EC in the history of the country,” the AAP national convener said.Expressing his support to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he hoped that the people of the state “will teach Modi a lesson in the polls”.Meanwhile, in New Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party volunteers joined in a protest Mobile Torch Rally in Chittaranjan Park area with a group of citizens to protest the violence in West Bengal.AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj, who participated in the protest, said, “What is happening in West Bengal is extremely serious and shows our democracy is in danger.””The Election Commission has failed in its impartiality test. Its oft-repeated slogan of level playing field has been reduced to a joke. If the situation was so serious that the EC felt campaigning had to be stopped then why was it not stopped immediately?” he posed.”It is extremely shameful the bust of one of the greatest social reformers Shri Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar-ji was destroyed. There is video evidence that the BJP was behind this shameful act. All of us need to stand in solidarity with Mamata Banerjee and the people of West Bengal,” he added.BJP and TMC supporters Tuesday fought pitched battles on the streets of Kolkata during a massive road show by Amit Shah, who escaped unhurt but was forced to cut short the jamboree and had to be escorted to safety by the police.Parts of the city plunged into a welter of violence as his convoy was attacked with stones by alleged TMC supporters from inside the hostel of Vidyasagar College, triggering a clash between supporters of the two parties.Furious BJP workers retaliated, and during the clash a bust of polymath-social reformer bust of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar inside the college campus was damaged. last_img read more

Month: July 2019 Rahul Gandhi Offers to Resign as Congress President After Another Rout Sonia

first_img amethicongressLok Sabha elections 2019Rahul Gandhi First Published: May 23, 2019, 6:56 PM IST Congress president Rahul Gandhi offered to resign from his post after the party was once again routed at the hands of Narendra Modi-led BJP in the Lok Sabha elections, sources told News18. However, erstwhile Congress supremo and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi turned down the offer.Sources told News18 that the matter will be taken up by the Congress Working Committee (CWC) in its next meeting, scheduled some time later this week. Gandhi, who himself has suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Smriti Irani in Amethi, congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the win as the BJP improved its tally from 2014 and crossed the 300-mark, making it the biggest mandate for a single party since 1984.But he refused to go into the reasons for the defeat of the Congress, which has only marginally improved its tally from a rock bottom of 44 in 2014 to 49 in 2019. Both the elections were fought under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. Gandhi said that he would not want to discuss the reasons for the defeat since today is only the day to respect India’s mandate, and the post-mortem will be done at the CWC meeting. The Congress was wiped off the map in the Hindi heartland and only defeated the BJP in Punjab and Kerala, from where Rahul Gandhi had contested on his second seat, Wayanad. In Amethi, which has been a stronghold for the Congress president, BJP leader and union minister Smriti Irani handed him a shock defeat. He conceded the defeat to her, despite over three lakh votes in the constituency were still to be counted.“I congratulate Smriti Irani for her win in Amethi,” Rahul said on Thursday during Congress’ press briefing. On the other hand, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has retained the Raebareli Lok Sabha seat, considered her fortress, since 2004. She won against her BJP counterpart with a comfortable margin of over a lakh votes. It has been a dismal performance for Congress in Uttar Pradesh so far with the grand old party ahead in only the one seat. last_img read more

Month: July 2019 Request Remind Repeat Jaganmohans Humble Game Plan for Modi to Grant Special

first_imgNew Delhi: With the NDA sweeping the Lok Sabha election, Andhra Pradesh CM-designate YS Jaganmohan Reddy said Sunday his party could only request and not “demand or command” the special category status a lifeline for the Rs 2.58 lakh debt-ridden state during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.Reddy, whose party stormed to power on Thursday with a landslide victory in assembly and Lok Sabha polls, said he requested the prime minister to be “magnanimous” towards the people of Andhra Pradesh. The YSR Congress Party chief also met BJP president Amit Shah and sought his support on the issue.”Today, we might not get it (special category status). We have to be at somebody’s mercy but I will remind him (Modi) again and again and someday things will change,” Reddy told reporters after meeting Modi at his 7, Lok Kalyan Marg residence. It would have been a “wonderful moment” for the YSRCP had the NDA won only 250 seats but it got 353 seats in the parliamentary election, he said, adding, “So they don’t need us (to form government), they are strong”.”There is very little we can do in demanding and commanding. But yes, we did meet the prime minister and explained to him why special category status is so important for us,” Reddy said.He explained to the PM that the special category status was a “lifeline” for the debt-ridden state as Andhra Pradesh requires funds. PM’s support is needed to run the state efficiently, he said.”Today, the state’s debt burden is very high. The debt was at Rs 97,000 crore when the state was bifurcated. In the last five years, our debt has swelled up to Rs 2.58 lakh crore. Our interest repayment alone are at Rs 20,000 crore per annum,” he said. The state’s principal and interest put together amount to Rs 40,000 per annum.”This is the kind of situation we are in. We did explain to him that this being the situation, we need a lifeline from you,” he said, adding that the special status is the state’s “right” and he stops fighting for it no one else would take interest in it.Reddy said he was happy that the prime minister gave a patient hearing to him.”He listened to the whole thing and was positive. That’s a good sign. From here, we are hoping that things would come out positively in better shape,” he said, adding he will continue to press his demands with Modi on the issue of the special category status.”Every time I meet him, I will definitely make it a point to remind him of the issue. Will remind him this was the word given on a floor of Parliament,” he said. The special category status is a major demand of the YSRCP and Reddy, during his election campaign, had said he would support the party at the national level which promises to grant the status to Andhra Pradesh.Reddy also mentioned, “he met the BJP President, the second-most powerful person in the country, to seek his support for the state’s key demands.”In his meeting with Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao Saturday, Reddy said he sought his support on the special status demand in Parliament and also talked about having friendly ties between neighbouring states to resolve the issues pending after bifurcation. He also said he will complete Polavaram irrigation project in the state and probe if there’s any scam in it. He said he will also order an investigation to unearth possible scams in building the state new capital Amaravati and into government schemes launched by former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The YSRCP chief said he invited the prime minister and the BJP chief to his swearing-in on May 30 in Vijayawada. The YSRCP chief also interacted with officials at Andhra Bhawan. On Saturday, he was unanimously elected as the leader of YSRC legislature party.Reddy’s party has won 151 of the 175 assembly and 22 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh, the elections for which were held on April 11. Month: July 2019 Mohan Markam Replaces CM Bhupesh Baghel as Head of Congs Chhattisgarh Unit

first_img Bhupesh Baghelchhatisgarh congresschhattisgarh chief minister bhupesh baghelCongress chief Rahul Gandhi First Published: June 28, 2019, 4:11 PM IST New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday appointed Mohan Markam head of the party’s Chhattisgarh unit, replacing Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel.Markam’s elevation to the post comes at a time when the party is coming to terms with its debacle in the Lok Sabha polls in which it could win just two parliamentary seats from the state despite coming to power with a massive mandate in the December assembly poll. Kondagaon MLA Markam succeeds Baghel, who said last week that he has asked Gandhi to appoint someone to head the state unit as he has his hands full as the chief minister. Baghel led the party to an emphatic win in the assembly polls in December, dislodging the Raman Singh government by winning 68 out of the 90 seats that went to the polls. The appointment by Gandhi also assumes significance as it comes amid uncertainty over him continuing as Congress president. He has been adamant on his decision to resign as the chief, citing accountability. last_img read more

Month: July 2019 iPhone 8 prototype puts screen in perspective

first_imgStory TimelineThis iPhone 8 dummy is the closest you’ll get to the real dealAs iPhone 8 starts OLED journey, Apple leaving nothing to chanceAn iPhone 8 3D face-scanner could replace Touch IDSome of these iPhone 8 leaks might leave you puzzlediPhone 8’s wireless charging accessory may not be ready at launch To be clear, the non-working metal prototype was also made from schematics only, not from any (illegally) acquired factory model. Unbox Therapy even uses an iPhone 8 screen protector to simulate the display. In other words, there may be some discrepancies between all these prototypes and the final product, but most of them mesh with what we’ve heard so far. And, of course, the screen is the star of the show here. Unbox Therapy measures the iPhone 8 dummy screen at 5.8 inches, which is by far still larger than the iPhone 7 Plus we have today. He also compares it to the Samsung Galaxy S8 which is its closest rival in that bezel-less game. In that single aspect, both seem to be near equal, especially with the iPhone 8 rumored to use an OLED panel. It will, then, boil down to other features like OS, fingerprint scanner, and headphone jack. One part of the screen that hasn’t really been talked about much is the part flanking the cutout for the front sensors on top. The mockup shows just a few status icons, which is pretty much all that you can fit in that small space. It won’t be enough to fit all the information you have right now on a regular iPhone, which means you’ll still be sacrificing a whole line for that. The topic of a fingerprint scanner, or rather the lack of it, also comes up and it might be the most debatable feature (or misfeature) of the iPhone 8. Apple will surely be able to spin how secure facial recognition will be if it goes that route, but it will need more than it’s own word to convince consumers who have gotten so used to the convenience and security of Touch ID. In the past, people were content with just seeing schematics of still to be announced phones. Then the world advanced to 3D renders and now, 3D printing. So it’s not exactly surprising that we’re not getting overloaded with prototypes of popular models, including the iPhone 8, of course. After OnLeaks’ and TigerMobiles’ prototype, Unbox Therapy also got his hands on one. This time, though, he goes to great lengths to compare it with what’s available in the market right now.last_img read more

Month: July 2019 iPhone 8 Xray confirms wireless charging Lshaped battery

first_imgFor the past days we have been inundated with clues about the iPhone 8 coming from the HomePod (thank you, Apple!). While the iPhone 8 story is hardly finished, it’s time for a respite and look for clues from other quarters. This time, the information comes from popular leakster Benjamin Geskin, who has provided some X-Ray images of what is allegedly the iPhone 8, revealing and confirming features such as wireless charging and the dual camera system. VIA: @Benjamin Geskin (1), (2) For nearly 10 years (since the iPhone 8 is, after all, the 10th anniversary edition), Apple has managed to stubbornly stay away from the admittedly messy wireless charging debate. Back then, it was more like a Wild West in terms of standards and compatibility. And by the time things have settled down, Apple already adopted a full metal design that left no room for the charging technology. But the iPhone 8 is switching back to a glass back supposedly, just like in the old days. But unlike the old days, Apple has also supposedly decided it was time to go wireless as well. hat is pretty much indicated by the internal shot of the iPhone 8 which shows the telltale signs of wireless charging in the form of a charging coil on top of the battery. But wait, there’s more! The battery itself is also quite interesting. It sports and odd L-shape instead of a traditional block. This was done in order to increase the iPhone 8’s battery capacity beyond what phones of its size are capable of. It is also something made possible by adopting a Substrate-like PCB (SLP) main board that squeezes in components into a more compact space. It is a type of board that Samsung will reportedly adopt in the Galaxy S9 next year. And just to round up today’s iPhone 8 gossip, a leak coming from China, on Weibo no less, seems to suggest that the iPhone 8 will come in a new color that probably no one asked for. Call it “Caramel” or “Yellow Brown” or something that shouldn’t be called, it may have been “inspired” by the Nokia 8 Copper Gold rumor that no one also asked for. There are, indeed, some rumors that hopefully remain just that: rumors.last_img read more

Month: July 2019 Lenovo ThinkPad X1 line gets CES 2018 update plus 4K Thunderbolt 3

first_imgLenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Gen)The ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Generation is Lenovo’s professional notebook, blending classic ThinkPad styling with the latest 8th Gen Intel Core chips. Offered with up to a Core i7 and Intel UHD Graphics 620, the X1 Carbon can be spec’d with up to 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM and up to a 1TB PCIe SSD. Battery life is up to 15 hours, and the display is a 14-inch HDR IPS 2560 x 1440 panel. Ports include two USB 3.0, two Thunderbolt 3, a headphone/mic combo, a microSD card reader, HDMI output, and a docking connector. 802.11ac 2×2 MIMO and Bluetooth 4.2 are inside; 4G LTE-A integrated WWAN will be an option.Meanwhile, a ThinkShutter camera cover provides physical safe-of-mind over webcam hacks, and there’s a fingerprint scanner for Windows Hello. A microphone array gives support for Amazon Alexa, and there’s Wake on Voice too. It’ll be priced from $1,709 when it goes on sale this month.Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Gen): Lenovo’s ThinkPad line-up is getting a refresh for CES 2018, with updated X1 Tablet, X1 Carbon notebook, and X1 Yoga models, together with a brand new 27-inch Thunderbolt 3 display. While they may be ostensibly targeting businesses and mobile pros, the combination of speedy 8th Gen Intel processors and features like Amazon Alexa mean there’s likely to be plenty of interest among consumers, too. As for that ThinkVision X1 display, it might be the Thunderbolt 3 display-hub you’ve been waiting for. Lenovo ThinkVision X1 MonitorLenovo’s last addition to its professional line at CES 2018 is the ThinkVision X1. A 27-inch display, it has minimal bezels around its 4K 3840 x 2160 IPS anti-glare panel. Maximum brightness is 350 cd/m2, while the contrast ratio is 1,000:1, and it covers 99-percent of the sRGB color gamut. It hooks up with a single Thunderbolt 3 cable, if you have a compatible notebook. If you don’t, there are DisplayPort 1.2 and HDMI 2.0 ports as well; Lenovo even throws an HDMI cable and a USB Type-C cable in the box. A four port USB 3.0 hub is built-in, and there’s a 3.5mm audio output as well. Most striking, though, is the “Motor Camera” which puts the webcam on a power-adjusted arm. That pivots up from behind the screen when required, then dips down again when not. A gimmick? Maybe, but it certainly looks cool. The ThinkVision X1 will go on sale this month like the rest of the updated X1 range, priced at $799.Lenovo ThinkVision X1 Monitor: As for connectivity, there are two Thunderbolt 3 ports, an SD card reader, headphone/mic combo, and a nano SIM slot for the 4G LTE-A Cat6 modem. There’s also 802.11ac 2×2 MIMO WiFi and Bluetooth 4.2. The whole thing weighs from 1.9 pounds tablet-alone, or 2.79 pounds with the keyboard. It’ll be priced from $1,599 when it goes on sale this month. Similarly, the ports include the same mixture of USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3, and HDMI, but it also finds space for an ethernet port. Baked-in LTE-A is also an option. You get the physical ThinkShutter camera cover, Alexa support, and fingerprint security as well. It’ll go on sale this month, priced from $1,889. Month: July 2019 Windows Mixed Reality headsets are now more affordable

first_imgIf you expected virtual, augmented, and mixed reality to be the centerpiece of CES 2018 a few weeks ago, you might have been sorely disappointed. Is the honeymoon finally over? Perhaps not. But there is a growing trend of making the technology more accessible to more people, in terms of design and, more importantly, price. As if to counter the arrival of cheaper and standalone headsets, Microsoft and its OEM partners have seemingly all decided to cut the prices of their virtual mixed reality gear by nearly half. Well, at least almost all of them. Microsoft wasn’t content to only have the HoloLens, which, to date, is its one and only Holographic, a.k.a. AR, device. Late last year, it launched Windows Mixed Reality, which, in its current incarnation, is more like virtual reality than a mix of AR and VR. And, this time, it pulled in its hardware partners to make the headsets. The same partners that are no slashing prices left and right. Here are the new prices for four out of five Windows MR kits:• Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset – $218.99• Dell Visor – $236.99• HP Mixed Reality Headset – $239.00• Lenovo Explorer – $245.99All of these come with the Oculus Touch-like controllers. The one OEM missing from the list is Samsung. Ironically, its HMD Odyssey bundle is even more expensive than before, selling for $733.90.That said, these are Amazon prices and may not apply from other retailers. The more pressing question is whether this is a permanent change or not. Given the trend of increasingly cheaper headsets from rivals like Oculus and HTC Vive, Windows MR devices are likely to keep an equally low figure even if the prices go up again.last_img read more

Month: July 2019 Galaxy S9 leaves LG and Huawei reportedly shelving MWC plans

first_imgLG, for example, launched the LG V30 at Mobile World Congress last year, and the expectation had been that its successor would debut at this year’s show. On Huawei’s side, meanwhile, last year it announced the P10 in Barcelona. This time around, there were whispers that we’d see the Huawei P20 at MWC.Throwing all of its rivals plans into disarray, however, is Samsung. The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus are expected to be unveiled at MWC 2018, and the fear, it seems, is that the new Android flagship will suck all the air out of the show. According to ETNews, that’s enough to dissuade LG and Huawei almost entirely. Huawei, for instance, is now said to be shelving plans to reveal the P20 there, and will instead hold its own event in April to give the smartphone its moment in the spotlight. At Mobile World Congress, it’ll reportedly focus instead on tablets and 2-in-1 notebooks.LG, meanwhile, will have a phone, but it won’t be the V30’s direct successor. Instead, the suggestion is that there’ll be an “enhanced” version of the existing phone. Expected to be the LG V30+, it’ll have more marginal tweaks rather than being all-new.Neither phone maker would especially benefit from going up against Samsung’s hotly-anticipated handsets. LG recently made headlines after executives conceded that the yearly upgrade cycle was making less and less sense for the company. Instead, it was suggested, better use could be made of incremental tweaks and updates, rather than aiming for an all-new design every twelve months. Since then, development of the LG G7 has reportedly been halted altogether, with the company’s engineers said to have been instructed by management to throw out what they’d been working on and start again from scratch. That unsurprisingly introduces a delay to the planned launch, which had been unofficially pegged for April. The eventual phone may even drop the “G” series branding altogether.Huawei’s challenge, meanwhile, centers on gaining traction in the US market. The company has had huge success internationally, climbing the smartphone rankings with its combination of affordable pricing and cutting-edge features. However, plans to announce a carrier deal in the US at CES earlier this month were scuppered, when AT&T reportedly came under political pressure over concerns about the Chinese government’s involvement with Huawei. It leaves Huawei attempting to carve out a business in the US with unlocked phone sales, which remain a narrow slice of the otherwise lucrative segment. With little movement on that front expected any time soon, despite the phone-maker’s protestations that it’s independent, a big phone launch at MWC 2018 would seem like a wasted opportunity. Bad news if you were hoping for some smartphone news from LG and Huawei at Mobile World Congress this year, with whispers that Samsung’s big Galaxy S9 reveal is making them cautious. The expectation – set up, it’s worth remembering, from previous examples of high-profile smartphone debuts at the cellular-centric Barcelona show – had been that both companies would debut new flagships within the next few weeks. Now, though, that looks unlikely. last_img read more

Month: July 2019 2018 iPad to borrow iPhone Xs smartest features

first_imgApple’s new 2018 iPad will likely adopt the company’s first Artificial Intelligence chip, part of the Cupertino firm’s attempt to better distinguish its tablet in the face of rivals. The so-called Neural Engine is Apple’s first dedicated AI chipset, and made its debut last year in the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus. Next, it’s expected to colonize the iPad. Story TimelineIf the 2018 iPad with Face ID looks this good, I’m sold2018 iPad Pro A11X Bionic to pack this much power in a tiny chipNew iPad may have this strange feature in 2018 In the 2017 smartphones, the Neural Engine was combined with the A11 Bionic system-on-chip that powers the iOS handsets. It’s a dedicated, dual-core chipset that’s capable of doing real-time processing on AI-specific tasks, which run the gamut from processing data from the TrueDepth camera array, figuring out what you’re asking from Siri without resorting to the cloud, and sifting through images to better sort and classify them. It’s not the first dedicated AI chipset, though Apple’s general heft in the smartphone space does mean it’s automatically one of the most important. Now, according to new reports, Apple is working on expanding it from just the iPhone to its iPad tablet range too. Indeed, we can apparently expect that before the year is through. The 2018 iPad refresh, Bloomberg reports, is expected to see the Neural Engine make an appearance in the new tablet. It’ll also, sources suggest, see Apple add its own graphics engine. That also debuted as part of the A11 Bionic last year, replacing Apple’s previous use of GPUs designed by Imagination Technologies. AdChoices广告It’s a strategy that makes plenty of sense, given what we’ve already heard about the new iPad. Digging through iOS 11.3, which was released in beta form last week ahead of its full arrival this coming Spring, signs of a “Modern” iPad were confirmed. That’s the same codeword as was used to refer to the iPhone X before it was announced last year. More importantly, the references concerned Face ID and this “Modern iPad” underscoring existing chatter of a tablet with the same TrueDepth camera and face recognition as the iPhone X offers. If that’s the case – and it seems like a highly probable expansion of one of Apple’s current key distinguishing features versus rival platforms – then adding in the Neural Engine and new homegrown GPU seem equally sensible. After all, the new iPad will need to do things like facial tracking, augmented reality processing, and all the other talents that the custom silicon does on the iPhone X.According to Bloomberg’s timescale, the new iPad looks unlikely to beat the 2018 iPhone refresh to market. Apple is expected to reveal three new phones late in the year, including a new version of the current iPhone X, a larger model for those wanting a “Plus” sized bigger screen – unofficially known as the iPhone X Plus – and a cheaper handset that compromises on dual rear cameras (but not, notably, TrueDepth) to hit an entry-level price. It’s not clear whether this new iPad will be branded as an iPad Pro, or stick with the regular iPad name which, currently, is associated more with an entry-level tablet. We’ll presumably find out more in the intervening months. The same Bloomberg report also suggested Apple would update two of its notebooks and a desktop Mac this year, each with its own custom co-processors. last_img read more

Month: July 2019 Android P notch tipped as Google pushes flexible phones

first_imgThe iPhone X’s notch looks set to spread, with Google reportedly preparing 2018’s Android P to natively support atypical screen shapes. Though controversial from the earliest rumors of its existence, the cut-out section at the top of the iPhone X’s OLED screen was a necessary evil given what sensors Apple wanted to include in the device. That’s because it was what Apple believed was the best way possible to accommodate two design goals that were functionally at odds. On the one hand, the iPhone-maker wanted to slim the bezels of its smartphones, pushing the edges of their screens closer to the sides. On the other, however, it wanted to increase the number of user-facing sensors, most notably the so-called TrueDepth camera, an array of components that power Face ID biometric security and facial tracking. Although divisive at first, after living with the notch the general consensus appears to have simmered down to the point where iPhone X owners don’t really notice it in day to day use. Now, Bloomberg reports, Google is looking to follow in Apple’s footsteps with some unusual display action of its own. As with the iPhone X, Android’s new notch provisions will be for functional reasons, rather than aesthetic. Android device-makers have similar goals to Apple, in that they want to trim down bezels yet also improve the number of front-facing sensors for more advanced features. Until now, we’ve seen a number of attempts to achieve that, with mixed results. The Essential Phone, for example, has a small notch cut out in the upper center of its touchscreen, for the front-facing camera; its earpiece speaker, LED notification light, and other components that must be positioned on the fascia of the phone are shoved into a narrow slit just above the display. AdChoices广告Other Android phones have trimmed the side bezels aggressively, but kept larger panels top and bottom to accommodate their cameras and other components. The downside to going the Essential route, though, is that Android makes copious use of the status bar at the top of the screen, which the Essential Phone’s camera basically divides in two. What Google would appear to be doing with its new version of Android, therefore, is what Apple did with iOS 11: getting its layout ready to support an interrupted status bar. That would mean Android phone-makers would be free to use non-rectangular displays if they so wished – Bloomberg says Huawei is working on such a device, in fact – without having to worry about cutting into functional parts of the UI. While that might seem like Google copying Apple, other planned changes to Android would push the platform beyond what iOS currently supports. According to the report, this new Android version will also cater natively to devices with multiple screens, as well as folding displays. Again, it’s about giving manufacturers using Android the flexibility to support new hardware designs without needing to modify the OS from stock in the process. Samsung, for example, is expected to launch a folding Galaxy smartphone either later this year or early in 2019, with the handset known currently as the Samsung Galaxy X using its bendable OLED screen technology. The “notch” itself, therefore, is just a side-product: a way first Apple, then Google use to accommodate escalating demands on the fascia of smartphones. Android P, expected to be released later this year according to the report, will also reduce power consumption and more tightly integrate the Google Assistant, it’s said. Third-party developers will get improved access to Assistant support in their apps, too, though that feature may slip depending on how aggressive Google’s software roadmap becomes. Month: July 2019 Why iPhone X weak demand hits Samsung more than Apple

first_imgHowever, it also carried a premium price tag, as Apple opted to add the iPhone X to a new position at the top of its smartphone line-up. Unlike previous years, where Apple announced two new iPhones in two different sizes, 2017 saw three iPhones launched. As well as the iPhone X, Apple also introduced the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which flank the OLED handset in terms of physical size. According to the Nikkei, “weak demand” for the iPhone X has led Apple to reduce production of the flagship smartphone. For Q1 2018, it reports, Samsung Display had counted on making 45-50 million OLED panels for the iPhone X. Now, it’s said, it will only supply 20 million panels, or potentially even fewer. “The company has yet to decide its production target for the April-June period,” the newspaper says, “but a further cutback may be in store.” On a facility that Samsung Display had dedicated to producing panels solely for Apple’s use, it could see production rates drop to half or less. It’s unclear how this short-term production decision tallies with ongoing reports about Apple’s 2018 iPhone range. That’s expected to not only include an update to the existing iPhone X, but see at least one more OLED handset join the line-up. Unofficially dubbed the iPhone X Plus, the smartphone is believed to keep the overall design of the current model but increase in both physical and screen size, replacing the iPhone 8 Plus in the process. A third new iPhone, expected to come in at 6.1-inches, is believed to stick with an LCD screen. That’s expected to form the entry-point into Apple’s 2018 iPhone range as the cheapest model. Frustrating the situation for Samsung may well be Apple’s attempts to divide its supplier dependencies. Earlier reports had indicated that, rather than continue to rely solely on Samsung Display for OLED supplies, the Cupertino firm was looking to hedge its bets and source panels from multiple providers. That includes LG Display, which is said to be on track to deliver the 6.5-inch OLED panel Apple will use for the iPhone X Plus. According to reports back in mid-2017, indeed, Apple was investing in LG Display’s OLED production to bring the technology up to speed for its needs. Not only would that secure Apple’s supply chain – given the terms of the deal apparently earmarked it all the panels it wanted – it would have a side-benefit of reducing its dependence on arch-rival Samsung. Of course, “weak demand” for iPhone X doesn’t necessarily translate to disappointment within Apple. While individual device sales may not have been the greatest in number out of recent flagship iPhone launches, Apple’s strategy arguably looked elsewhere to measure overall success. Higher sticker prices compared to other iPhone models mean that each iPhone X sale is worth more to the company’s bottom line; indeed, the premium pricing of the OLED smartphone meant that Q1 2018 sales revenue set records, even if shipment numbers did not. What may be bad news for Samsung Display, therefore, isn’t necessarily bad news for Apple. For a supplier, the more components you can sell, the more profit you make. For Apple, however, the focus is less on numbers of devices and more on the profit margin on each device. With the 2018 iPhone range likely to double-down on that strategy, Apple’s goals will only further diverge from those of component providers like Samsung Display. Slashed iPhone X production has forced Samsung to cut its OLED output, according to new reports out of South Korea, highlighting the supply chain impact that Apple’s focus on device pricing over sales volume has already had in 2018. The smartphone, launched in late 2017, is Apple’s first handset to use OLED rather than LCD for its display, allowing the iPhone X to dramatically slim its bezels compared to earlier phones. Month: July 2019 Google Pixel smartwatches this year 1 2 or 3

first_imgGoogle Pixel 3 will likely appear at a similar time as last year’s devices – but a few extra devices were tipped this afternoon, too. Included in the mix are three models: Ling, Triton, and Sardine – that’s according to Roland Quandt, who also suggests the devices will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 mobile processor. There might be three, there might be two, or there might just be one. Over at WinFuture, the three fish-related device code-names were revealed this afternoon. At least one of these devices was suggested to exist by Evleaks on Twitter earlier this morning – he called it a “Pixel-branded watch.” It’s likely, according to Blass (Evleaks), that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will also be joined by a pair of 2nd-gen Pixel Buds. One would hope that the three models of Google Pixel Watch would be well-refined and work with top-notch hardware after such an immense amount of time between the birth of Wear OS and today. One would also assume that the latest update to Wear OS would inform the abilities of these next-generation watches. Have a peek at the following video to get an idea of what the latest version of Wear OS looks like and works like, straight from Google. While there might be three different devices in the mix, there might also be a strategy in play here not unlike what Google did with Pixel 2. With Pixel 2, three codenames were found in AOSP development, but only two devices resulted. If Google’s aiming for the perfect device, they might well just have three devices in development until a final one or two are selected.Have a peek at a few Wear OS articles below to learn more about what’s been going on in recent weeks. Month: July 2019 Where to put your old phone batteries Hint NOT in the garbage

first_imgThe fire here was likely caused by a pierced exterior casing of a lithium ion battery. These batteries are mostly constructed in a way that it’s difficult to create a circuit without the original smartphone’s hardware poking in metal in just the right places – but that’s also possible. The next example shows a situation where sheer dumb luck allowed a battery fire to burn over a MINIMAL amount of space. Even though this battery fire began in a pile of cardboard and paper, it separated from the most flammable bits of its surroundings at the most opportune moment. AdChoices广告Also lucky: There was a bucket loader nearby to stomp it out, like so many bags of flaming poo. Much like the videos above, the video below shows how important it is to separate lithium ion batteries from all other items – even other batteries. Story TimelineApple Japan and Sony settle lawsuit regarding Battery FireGalaxy Note 7 battery fire investigation: What you need to knowAirlines restrict smart bags over lithium-ion battery fire risk Oh jeepers! What should I do?So what should you do if you happen to have a smartphone – or the odd loose lithium ion battery? There’s a few really, really simple options available. If you live in a big city, you might have a Best Buy nearby – they’ve got an electronics recycling program where you can drop off batteries to your heart’s content. The same is true of a large number of Lowe’s, Batteries Plus, RadioShack (lol good luck with that one), Home Depot, and city recycling centers. Keep your batteries in a bag, and next time you’ve gotta go to one of the stores listed above, bring em with! Every city either has a dump, a recycling center, or both – so utilize that, too, if you’re all about visiting your friendly neighborhood refuse handlers. That’s generally a good place to pick up odds-and-ends free parts, paint, and cords too – all free. Have a peek!If you’d like other options, head over to Call2Recycle and they’ll give you a few more. The Call2Recycle organization was the first “producer-funded U.S. primary (single-use) battery recycling program launched in Vermont.” They’ll more than likely point you toward this handy-dandy GPS-marked map, showing you your nearest battery recycling facility. The video above shows a lead battery recycling stream, as interrupted with a BANG because of an accidental placement of a single lithium ion battery. Bad business happens when lithium ion batteries – even the tiny lithium ion batteries in your phones – get tossed in with garbage or standard recycling. Finally we’ve got a video all the way back in the year 2013. This situation shows what’ll go down if lithium ion batteries are stored in bulk and a fire breaks out. It’s not a pretty sight. This video comes from an insurance agency, showing how simple it is to start such a massive fire.center_img First we’re looking at a video from Ecomaine. According to the team at this recycling facility, someone tossed a Lithium Ion battery (almost certainly from a smartphone) in with the rest of their recyclable material in a single-sort recycling bin. Lithium-ion batteries are exploding at dumps and recycling plants across the United States – and that’s a problem. These types of batteries come most often in the device that’s likely in your hand or pocket – your smartphone. Today we’re taking a quick peek at a few explosions and a few SUPER SIMPLE ways they could’ve been avoided at the source.last_img read more

Month: July 2019 Xperia XZ3 now available in the US

The Xperia XZ3 at least has the looks as far as premium flagships go. Earlier this year, Sony bid farewell to the blocky and cold design it’s had for years. The Xperia XZ3 assures fans of the new, colorful and curved design that it wasn’t a one-off thing. The 6-inch screen, which is Sony’s first OLED smartphone panel instead of its world-famous LCD, gives it a handy size and a bright, colorful screen.Inside, it’s no pushover either. Well, somewhat. It does have the latest Snapdragon 845 processor but 4 GB of RAM for a late 2018 flagship is pushing it. 64 GB of storage is at least expandable and considering the overall specs, the 3,300 mAh battery might just be OK, especially with Sony’s much-advertised STAMINA mode.So where does the Xperia XZ3 fall short? It has only one camera on its back. While the lone 19 megapixel Sony sensor is arguably quite the camera, with its Motion Eye tech and 960 fps slow motion recording, it is fighting for space in a market where dual cameras have become the norm on flagships at this price point.AdChoices广告That price point is $899.99, at least on Amazon where Sony sells its smartphones in the US. The retailer offers the Xperia XZ3 in colors of Black, Forest Green, and White Silver. Unfortunately, the more interesting Bordeaux Red is nowhere to be seen. Unless the Chinese company’s luck and standing has changed, however, that’ll be near impossible for US buyers. Those will have to settle for one of the other expensive smartphones that are available in the US market, through carriers or retailers. One such premium phone is the Xperia XZ3, Sony’s unsurprising late 2018 contender that will make you wonder how much Sony’s smartphone brand is really worth. read more
